We invite applications from highly motivated individuals to study tsetse fly symbiosis in the context of population genetics/genomics. Successful candidates should have a PhD in entomology or evolutionary biology or microbiology with applications in medically relevant insect systems. Strong skills in genetics and genomics methods as well as field entomological experience are desirable and a minimum of 3 first-author publications is required
Our lab studies the tsetse fly (Glossina sp.) to investigate the physiological, molecular and genetic mechanisms that underlie 1) vector population structures in Africa, 2) tsetse host-African trypanosome interactions, 3) tsetse host-endosymbiotic bacteria interactions, and 4) tsetse’s unique viviparous reproductive biology. The genome sequence of all partners is now available making it a highly tractable model organism.
This position will involve studying the Glossina fuscipes and Glossina pallidipes population structures in East Africa and requires a major commitment for participating in field-based studies. The focus is to understand the microbial community influences (Wolbachia and others) on host population structures.
