The Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration (Directed by Dr. Darren Moore) within the Van Andel Research Institute’s Center for Neurodegenerative Science has positions available for Post-doctoral Fellows.
Post-doctoral fellow positions are available for highly motivated PhD graduates who meet the qualifications and description outlined below. Fellows are expected to use or to establish biochemical, cellular and animal models to investigate the pathogenic mechanisms underlying LRRK2 dysfunction in familial Parkinson’s disease. The laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach in numerous experimental model systems to elucidate the biological function and pathophysiology of gene products associated with inherited forms of Parkinson’s disease. The laboratory is particularly interested in the development of novel rodent models of inherited Parkinson’s disease using viral-mediated gene transfer, transgenesis or gene targeting.
Please refer to our website for an overview of our research: http://www.vai.org/vari/research-groups/laboratory-of-molecular-neurodegeneration.aspx.
A recent Ph.D. graduate with demonstrated experience in any of the following fields: cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, proteomics and/or neuroscience. At least one publication in these fields would be desirable.
A preferred candidate will have experience in any of the following research areas: cell-based and/or in vitro assays, confocal and/or stereological microscopy, viral vector technology, development of genetic animal models, rodent neuropathology and behavior, or molecular/cellular neurobiology, to characterize protein function, neuronal trafficking and/or cell death pathways.
Must provide at least three (3) letters of recommendation.
Description of a Successful Candidate:
A hands-on researcher and a natural collaborator comfortable interacting at all levels
A team player who proactively shares knowledge and expertise with lab members
A detail oriented researcher who still keeps a clear grasp of the big picture
A driven individual who is able to exhibit exceptional research productivity and a strong work ethic
Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) provides postdoctoral training opportunities to scientists beginning their research careers. The fellowships are to help promising scientists advance their knowledge and research experience and at the same time support the research endeavors of VARI under the mentorship of a VARI Faculty member.
While this project is currently funded, an integral part of postdoctoral training is the process of preparing a research proposal and writing a fellowship application. All VARI Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding as soon as it is practical and reasonable after hire. Receiving a fellowship award provides recognition for both the fellow and VARI.
The overall goal of the projects is to identify the molecular mechanisms and cellular pathways by which LRRK2 mutations contribute to neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease and to develop novel disease-modifying therapeutic approaches. The candidate will work with Dr. Moore and his research team to identify areas of interest and expertise that will facilitate the highest level of contribution to reach overall project objectives.
