Two positions for postdoctoral fellows in the area of deep brain stimulation (DBS) and neural prostheses for motor and psychiatric disorders are sought. The aim of the first project is to understand how DBS alters specific neural pathways in rodent models and the role of specific neurotransmitters. The candidate will join a dynamic team that uses techniques ranging from intracellular recordings, multielectrode extracellular and local field potential recordings, optogenetic techniques, immunohistochemistry, and associated behavioural assays. The second project aims to develop imaging and/or electrophysiological biomarkers of response to DBS for depression in humans. Experience with intraoperative extracellular unit and post-operative local field potential recordings or fMRI data analysis and task development is required. The two PDFs will be expected to participate in planning and intellectual development of projects, and will use multidisciplinary approaches to satisfy research objectives.
Candidates must have a PhD with a strong background in electrophysiology, and a publication record in respected scientific journals. A competitive salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience, in accordance with Alberta Innovates Health Solutions guidelines.
The training environment within the Hotchkiss Brain Institute is superb with translational facilities, a weekly basic seminar series and clinical rounds, both of which feature leading international neuroscientists. We have strength in both synaptic and systems physiology and in addition to about 30 electrophysiology rigs surrounding our lab, we are immediately adjacent to neuroscience clinics at the Foothills Hospital. Thus, the successful candidate will have access to a wide variety of mentors, techniques and approaches that will provide a unique training experience.
