job description
-Undertake research with real-world impact
-Work in a leading scientific environment with dedicated and talented professionals
-Kickstart your research career with CSIRO!
The Position:
We are seeking to appoint a three-year Postdoctoral Fellow who will investigate the nitrogen dynamics of tropical savanna systems with the aim of improving the productivity and resource management of northern Australian beef systems which are reliant on the understorey grasslands.
One of the key gaps for modelling animal production in northern Australia is the understanding of nitrogen dynamics in the grasslands. After water availability, nitrogen is the key limitation to pasture and animal production. Nitrogen flows in the system are driven strongly by climate variability with low animal production often following big wet seasons that induce nutrient dilution, and, conversely, large production spikes following years of drought in response to a build up in available nitrogen. Our biological understanding of the climate-nitrogen dynamics is poor and our current approaches to modelling animal production in northern Australia don’t yet adequately incorporate nitrogen dynamics.
Specific duties include:
-Review the literature on nitrogen dynamics relevant to northern Australian rangelands.
-Undertake field work exploring the influence of climate variability, soil type and management on the nitrogen dynamics of pasture production and forage quality.
-Work with the modelling team in a related project to develop new approaches to incorporating nitrogen dynamics into existing models of pasture and animal production to improve their ability to predict system performance.
*Location: *Australian Tropical Sciences and Innovation Precinct, Townsville
*Salary: *$75K – $82K per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation
*Ref No: *Q00854
To be successful you’ll have:
-A PhD degree (either recently or soon to be completed) in a relevant discipline, such as agriculture, natural resource management, ecology or plant physiology.
-Demonstrated understanding of biological processes in complex agricultural or natural systems either through experimentation and/or modelling.
-Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills including a demonstrated record of publishing in peer reviewed journals.
