Postdoctoral Research Assistant (α-toxin-membrane interactions) School of Crystallography, Faculty of Science.

We are seeking a postdoctoral scientist who will take part in a new project investigating the interaction of Clostridium perfringens _-toxin with membranes. This toxin is the key virulence factor in gas-gangrene, a common complication of diabetes. Gangrene treatment includes amputation of the affected limb, and rates of diabetes and its complications are escalating as obesity increases. At Birkbeck, Professor David Moss, Dr Ajit Basak and Dr Claire Naylor will be investigating the interaction the toxin, a phospholipase C, with its substrate membranes (both liposomes and mammalian cells) utilizing fluorescent labelling and confocal microscopy. There will also be the opportunity to investigate the structure of the protein by X-ray crystallography. The results of this work will provide insights into how to disrupt the toxin’s membrane binding activity which may be of use in treatment of disease.

Applicants should have excellent molecular biology skills and be willing to spend periods of time at other laboratories in the UK. The post is available for up to three years.
