Job Description

Position: Post-Doctoral Fellowship within the Cardiorespiratory/Metabolic Laboratory (CRML), directed by Richard J. Bloomer, PhD, in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences (HSS). The position may be renewed annually for a total commitment of up to three years, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding. Position # L16605.

Setting: The CRML is housed within the Department of HSS at The University of Memphis (www.memphis.edu/hss/crml). The research conducted within the CRML involves human subjects and has the central focus of improving metabolic and cardiovascular health, as well as physical performance. Most studies are centered on oxidative stress, with research focused on the following three areas: 1) Nutraceuticals and dietary supplements to improve health, performance, and associated biomarkers; 2) Production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and associated biomarkers after acute stress (both feeding-induced and exercise-induced); 3) Nutrient interventions (e.g., dietary restriction) to improve risk factors for metabolic and cardiovascular disease. The University of Memphis, a Tennessee Board of Regents institution, is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as one of two public research universities and the only community engaged public university in Tennessee. It has six colleges and four professional schools serving a diverse population of about 23,000 students, 5,000 of whom are enrolled in graduate programs. Opportunities are available for collaboration with investigators in multiple departments on campus, as well as at UT Health Science Center, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Qualifications: All of the following are required.
•A PhD in nutrition, physiology, exercise science, or a closely related field of study (by August 2012)
•A firm understanding of oxidative stress and the relation to nutraceuticals, dietary ingredients, food intake, and/or exercise
•Experience in human subject research (e.g., recruitment, screening, scheduling, data collection, etc.)
•Experience performing biochemical assays (e.g., ELISA, enzyme kinetics, etc.)
•Excellent management and interpersonal skills
•Excellent English written and oral communication skills
•Ability to understand key scientific findings and determine the next course of action

In addition to the above, the following are not required at the time of employment but will be considered an asset (and candidate must be open to learning these and similar skills).
•Experience with common exercise testing tools (e.g., metabolic system, EKG, stress testing, strength testing)
•Experience in phlebotomy and processing blood
•Experience performing muscle biopsies and processing tissue samples
•Experience in molecular biology techniques

Responsibilities: All of the following will be expected.
•Coordinating all CRML activities (e.g., scheduling, purchasing, etc.)
•Overseeing research activities within the CRML
•Managing a team of graduate research assistants (MS level)
•Assisting with data collection, analysis, and interpretation
•Performing biochemical assays
•Assisting with manuscript writing
•Assisting with grant writing
•Presenting data at national/international conferences
•Contributing new ideas for current and future projects
•Coordinating interactions and collaborations with other laboratories
•Assisting in plans to expand/improve the CRML (e.g., layout, equipment, etc.)

Salary and Beginning Date: Starting salary will be $36,000, with a potential for annual increase. The position is for twelve months. The University offers an excellent benefits package, and the state of Tennessee currently has no state income tax. Memphis and the surrounding areas maintain a very low cost of living relative to most parts of the country. The anticipated date of employment is on or before August 20, 2012.

Application: The review of completed applications will begin July 6, 2012, and may continue until the position is filled. Applications are to be submitted electronically at https://workforum.memphis.edu (posting found under faculty tab). Applicants should submit their detailed CV and a cover letter addressing every qualification cited above. The cover letter should also clearly state how this position will assist the applicant’s overall career goals. Applicants should also provide the names and complete contact information of three professional references.
