Neurodegenerative Diseases

The University of Chicago Department of Neurology, in collaboration with the newly created Department of Neurobiology, seeks to hire two scientists or physician-scientists at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the tenure track, whose research focus applies a translational neuroscience approach to the area of neurodegenerative disorders.

The successful applicant is expected to have an established research program with a strong foundation in basic or translational neuroscience that uses novel methods and strategies to investigate cause and treatment of degenerative diseases/disorders of the nervous system, including fundamental mechanisms of disease, new diagnostic tools, or novel therapeutic interventions. Areas of disease focus might include, but are not limited to, movement disorders such as Parkinson’s or Huntington’s disease, motor neuron diseases, the dementias, multiple sclerosis or the spinocerebellar ataxias.

Strong preference will be given to scientists with emphasis on research platforms that integrate well with, and are complementary to the interests of a growing group of basic and clinical neuroscientists at the University of Chicago working in the area of neurodegenerative diseases and repair. Areas of preferred interest include emphasis on new genetic models of human neurodegenerative disease, gene-environment interactions, neuronal cell death and neuroprotection, biomarker discovery, or novel therapy programs, such as viral, gene, or stem cell therapy.

The University of Chicago offers a rich environment in basic and clinical neuroscience research, and a long tradition of collaborative interactions. New recruitment initiatives in wide neuroscience areas in the clinical and basic science departments are occurring simultaneously in the context of a newly launched Neuroscience Institute, providing an excellent opportunity to build on the strength of existing neuroscience programs. Faculty will have access to academic and graduate programs through the vigorous Graduate Programs in Neurobiology as well as several other interdisciplinary programs that flourish at the University of Chicago.

Successful candidates will be expected to have and maintain a strong, extramurally funded research program. Academic rank, salary and start-up funds will be commensurate with background and experience. Excellent teaching skills required. Candidates must have an M.D., a Ph.D, or a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree. Physicians must be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois and must be eligible for require board certifications.
