Description
Postdoctoral Rumen Microbiologist/Microbial Ecologist
Food, Metabolism & Microbiology
A postdoctoral research position is available in the field of rumen microbiology within the Food, Metabolism & Microbiology section of AgResearch. The project will focus on factors which affect methane formation, microbial community composition and activity, and microbe-microbe and microbe-environment interactions in the rumen. The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic team of microbiologists and molecular ecologists, and will develop and apply molecular techniques in conjunction with culture methodologies to obtain new information on processes involved in rumen function. The project is a key part of a research programme aimed at developing methods to lower methane emissions from grazing ruminants. The study is funded by the New Zealand Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium (PGgRc), an organisation supported by industry and by government.
The position would suit a motivated, independent, career-minded scientist with a strong background in microbiology and/or molecular microbial ecology and with good communication skills. The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent degree. Knowledge of ARB, FISH and familiarity with microbial ecology or anaerobic ecosystems would be an advantage. Applications from microbiologists with experience with phage of bacteria or archaea would also be welcomed. The appointment will be for an initial period of 2 years with a strong opportunity for subsequent permanent appointment. The preferred starting date is 1 December 2007, but this is negotiable depending on the applicant’s suitability.
The Food, Metabolism & Microbiology Section is part of AgResearch’s Food & Health Group based at the Grasslands Research Centre in Palmerston North. The team has a wide experience in all aspects of rumen microbiology. The modern facilities include databases, real-time PCR, PFGE, DGGE, GLC, HPLC, GC-MS and microscopy. Palmerston North, a university city, is 30 km from the coast, 2 hours from ski fields, and 2 hours from Wellington. The AgResearch Grasslands campus is situated in pleasant rural surroundings with easy access to Palmerston North. The surrounding area offers many outdoor recreational opportunities.
