Description
Applications are invited for this two-year research post (can beextended to three) which is suitable for a higher degree (MD or PhD(three years)).
Grade: Level C in Pathway 2
Our group carry out translational research and have previously taken aresearch question all the way from experimental models through clinicalpilot trials, RCT into clinical practice (hypothermia after perinatalasphyxia). The proposed project will investigate another field ofpotential treatment after a disabling condition in premature infants;ventricular dilatation after intraventricular haemorrhage (PHVD) leadingto hydrocephalus. We have developed two models of PHVD to study thepatophysiology and develop new treatment options. Impaired reabsorptionof cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with development of raised intracranialpressure after subaracnoid haemorrhage is a complication seen in theadult, hence the project is applicable not only to the newborn.
You need to have a clinical background (SPR/SHO) to run the models andstudy the mechanism of this condition. We study the ability of certaindrugs to inhibit the fibrosis that develop with PHVD. We hypothesizethat fibrosis impairs the CSF reabsorbtion. You will take part in otherprojects run by the team of five including one night shift once everytwo-three weeks (our experimental NICU). You must be medically qualifiedwith experience in neonatology/intensive care or equivalent. Proficiencyin using computers, knowledge of statistics, interest in pathology andpharmacology and previous research experience is desirable. There is noroutine clinical work involved except occasional assistance on studiesof clinical hypothermia.
