Description

Purpose:
This is a new post within the Conway Institute Mass SpectrometryResource for a Research Assistant in Mass Spectrometry. The candidatewill take full responsibility for proteomic analysis of samplesgenerated from experiments in the recently funded SFI ReproductionBiology Research Cluster (RBRC) research programme, using the existingstate-of-the-art technology to answer questions in reproductive biologyof animal models. He/she will actively participate in conception andapplication of new protocols to develop and exploit innovative proteomic approaches.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide technical support to run the mass spectrometry suite.
Assist the Director of Mass Spectrometry Resource in both experimentaldesign before use of the core technology, and subsequently in theanalysis and presentation of results.
Provide training in the sample preparation and use of theinstrumentation and to assist the researcher when required, or in somecases, to carry out core technology experiments for researcher.

Monitor the core technology instrumentation such that at all times it iscalibrated, maintained and used correctly according to standardprocedures, and that any system faults are reported and dealt with.

Operate Q-TOF and ion trap mass spectrometers and any other equipmentthat will be brought into the mass spectrometry suite. In particular, astechnology development is an important part of the post, flexibility isessential and the willingness to evaluate new technologies as theyemerge and set in place mechanisms to compare technologies.

Maintain a high level of familiarity with background and applications ofcore technology and keep informed of new developments in the field.

Ensure that an effective booking system is in place.

Train other proteomics research facility users in the use of instrumentation.
Other reasonable duties as required contributing to the achievement ofRBRC objectives.
Commitment to continuing Professional Development, including taking onresponsibilities consequent on new technologies.

Expanded role in research, which would involve supporting researchactivities, or a more inclusive role in Research Programmes and greaterengagement in this area.This may involve additional training, forexample with particular equipment and/or techniques.

Increased role for general administrative responsibilities, for exampleHealth and Safety requirements, Stores and the assistance in activitiessuch as budget control and purchasing etc.

Necessary Skills/Qualifications:
A third level qualification in Life Sciences.
Proven relevant post qualification experience in mass spectrometry ofpeptides and proteins, in particular in the application of twodimensional chromatographic separation of peptide mixtures andsubsequent LC-MS/MS analysis (MudPIT) and quantitative proteomics (iTRAQ).
Good interpersonal and teamwork skills and the ability to communicateeffectively with Conway personnel at all levels.
Excellent time management and co-ordination skills.
Computer literacy with particular experience of spreadsheets and databases.
Ability to prioritise workloads and schedules and delegate to otherstaff where necessary.
High level of flexibility across the complete range of technical equipment.
Knowledge of health and safety aspects of working with massspectrometers and proteomics facilities.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications:
Evidence of continued professional development post-qualification in thearea of mass spectrometry or other relevant scientific disciplines.
The person appointed will have good financial management skills toensure accurate charge-back and cost recovery for use of coretechnologies from researcher accounts.
Interest in the technology development in the area of proteomics andmass spectrometry.
Track record of publication of research findings.

Application procedure:
This appointment is for an initial period of three years, renewable foranother two years, subject to a positive review in year 3 of the SFIaward and compliance with the conditions of the SRC programme. Thesalary point on the Research Assistant Scale will be based on experience.
We wish to recruit a person at Level 2: Research Assistant €40,000 to€45,000 per year depending on experience and qualifications.

There is no particular deadline for application. Candidates matching themandatory requirements will be considered until the position is covered.
