The position is funded through aninstitutional K-12 grant from the NIH/NHLBI and aims to develop researchindependence in the analysis of genome-wide genetic and gene expressiondata. Research projects will focus on the identification of geneticdeterminants of asthma/COPD for physician investigators. The successfulapplicant should have either outstanding quantitative skills, formaltraining in genetics or genomics, or both. He/she will be involved inall aspects of learning how to perform this type of research. Applicantsshould have experience in genetic epidemiology, genomics, and/orcomputer programming, and have an M.D. degree or the equivalent.
Our laboratory uses family-based and case-control genetic study designscombined with high-throughput genotyping and gene expressiontechnologies to elucidate the determinants of chronic airway diseases. We have established 10 well-characterized cohorts (totaling more than10,000 subjects with DNA samples) for the study of asthma and chronicobstructive pulmonary disease. Our laboratory is equipped with high- andintermediate-throughput genotyping and gene expression platforms, including the Illumina Bead Station and ABI 7900 platforms, an ABI3730XL DNA sequencer, robotics, an integrated LIMS system, and a 20 nodeSUN-based cluster. Our faculty has strong expertise in conducting largeepidemiologic, genetic, and genomic studies, and extensive experiencewith analyses of genomic data.
