Description

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Carbon Nanostructures for Hydrogen Storage

Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge, Tennessee

ORNL08-37-CNMS

Project Description:
The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge NationalLaboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill a postdoctoral position in theFunctional Hybrid Nanostructures group. The applicant will purify, synthetically modify, and characterize single-wall carbon nanohorns,single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, and other nanostructures, and will carry out research to test and modifythese materials for use as hydrogen storage media. The successfulcandidate should have a strong interest in hydrogen storage and becapable of innovative, independent research in this area. The applicantwill spend a fraction of time involved in the user-initiated researchprogram at the CNMS, developing chemistry and processing techniques tointegrate these materials with polymers and other materials to developnovel functional nanocomposites. The applicant also is responsible forhelping to establish the user facilities in this area, for collaboratingwith and supporting users, and for operating and maintaining thefacilities. The CNMS (http://cnms.ornl.qov/) is a collaborativenanoscience user research facility established by the Office of Science,U.S. Department of Energy. The CNMS has a diverse spectrum ofnanoscience research activities including a nanofabrication facility;laboratory-based research on macromolecular materials, catalysts, functional nanomaterials, and magnetism and transport; characterizationwith electron microscopes, scanning probes, and x-ray diffraction andscattering; and theory, modeling, and simulation.

Duties:
The primary duties are to develop synthetic methods to process andchemically-decorate single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) for use ashydrogen storage media through adjustments in pore size and decorationwith metal catalyst particles. A strong background in chemicalsynthesis, processing, and characterization techniques is required inorder to develop synthetic methods to chemically modify SWNHs and/orSWNTs to improve solubility, dispersion, or function and characterizethe products. Experience in transmission electron microscopy andscanning electron microscopy to characterize the nanostructures ishighly desirable. Experience in surface area and pore size measurementsby BET techniques is also highly desirable. Methods of processingnanomaterials into functional forms, such as membranes andnanoengineered architectures is desirable. The candidate will interactwith partners in a national DOE Hydrogen Sorption of Excellence. As partof their duties, the applicant will interact with users at the CNMS tomodify and process nanomaterials such as SWNHs, SWNTs, nanowires, andnanoparticles into functional hybrid nanostructures with enhancedfunctional properties, especially optoelectronic composites withphotovoltaic or electroluminescent functionality. In consultation withCNMS/ORNL staff, develop collaborative user facilities and providescientific support for users. Participate in projects involvingscientific research and developing methodology and instrumentation.Train users in the methods used and to operate equipment as needed, andprovide timely technical support. Ensure efficient use of the facilitiesby coordinating scheduling with users and staff. Participate with otherscientists in developing methodology and instrumentation. Participate inthe design, implementation, and evaluation of collaborative experiments.

Qualifications:
Ph.D. (within last 4 years) in organic or polymer chemistry, ormaterials science. Experience in organic synthesis and characterization, and standard analytical techniques is required, with experience incarbon nanotube chemistry or processing highly desirable. Electronmicroscopy experience and a broad range of knowledge regarding materialscharacterization techniques are desirable. Ability to conduct creative, independent research is required. Applicants should have excellentanalytical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to workcollaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with abroad range of colleagues. Demonstrated ability to communicate inEnglish to an international scientific audience is essential. Record ofproductive and creative research demonstrated by publications inpeer-reviewed journals.

This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postdoctoral ResearchAssociates Program and is administered by Oak Ridge AssociatedUniversities (ORAU). This appointment is open to all qualified U.S. andnon-U.S. citizens without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, or status as aVietnam-era veteran or disabled veteran.
