Description
This is an exciting opportunity for a person with a PhD, in Statisticsor related discipline, who is looking to develop his/her career inresearch or fields around food safety. S/he will join a research team ofINRA (French Research Institute for Agronomy), in the researchdepartment of Applied Mathematics and Informatics, developing Bayesianstatistical approaches for risk assessment in food microbiology.Specifically, the post-holder is expected to work in developing Bayesianmodels to analyse the fate of some pathogens (e.g. Listeriamonocytogenes, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus) along a foodchain and to study new experimental designs using both graphical models, qualitative expertise and numerical data.
This contract is for 27 months maximum and 9 months minimum. Thepost-holder will work in a joint project with the French Food SafetyAgency , Veterinary Laboratories, technical centres for food industriesand statistical units from the French Research Institute for Agronomy todevelop methods for the predictions of distribution of pathogens atvarious steps of the food chain. This project is founded by the FrenchNational Research Agency. The post-holder will join the methodologicalteam composed of the three statistics units involved in the project (seeURL at the end). The first nine months will be based in Jouy-en-Josas(78350), easily connected to Paris, and the next following 18 months inParis (AgroParisTech, 75005).
Job Description – Main Duties
The general goal of the project is to improve the food safety inindustrial or collective processes. Based on several preciseapplications undertaken with the experts of the domain, new insights inquantitative methodology will be attempted. The appointee will carry outthe implementation of the statistical models needed to analyse datadescribing the food chains and the fate of the micro-organisms studiedin the project. S/he will put special attention to the statisticalevaluation of current or new sampling practices as well as controlmeasures. The position involves methodological and applied work onmodelling. This project is led by Dr. Marie Cornu (PrincipalInvestigator) from the French Food safety Agency (Afssa) and by threeco-investigators (Drs. Isabelle Albert, Jean-Baptiste Denis and EricParent) as far as the quantitative methodological aspects of the projectare concerned. The post holder will also contribute to extensiveinteraction with the other scientific collaborators from technicalcentres that provide the data and the expertise.
Main duties will include:
· Active participation in developing the multidisciplinary features ofthe research project.
· Literature searches and reviews.
· Provision of statistical expertise to research project.
· Statistical analyses of data and development of statistical methods.
· Implementation of statistical models using statistical packages suchas R or WinBUGS.
· Exchange of premises and interpretation of results with non-statisticians.
· Contribution to publications, seminars and other presentations ofstudy results.
· Other duties as may be required by the principal investigator orco-investigators, that are commonly expected from the other members ofthe research staff.
Education and Qualifications
· Qualifications are a PhD in statistics or biostatistics; preferablycomprising Bayesian modelling and/or use of Bayesian networks, and/ormodelling in Quantitative Risk Assessment.
Experience and Knowledge
· Appropriate research skills and experience in the field of statisticsand modelling
· Experience of using at least one of a statistical/computing softwarelike R, WinBUGS, Matlab, Scilab,...
· Knowledge of Bayesian network softwares such as Grappa, Hugin orBayesialab would be desirable.
Skills and Abilities
· Able to prioritise jobs and organise work effectively to meet deadlines
· Able to communicate and collaborate effectively, both in person andvia telephone/email, with a wide range of staff from various disciplines
· Able to present information effectively to meetings, give positiveinput to discussion at meetings, and contribute to written reports andpapers for publication
· Able to take the initiative to identify problems and suggest improvedworking methods without necessarily being instructed to do so
· Able to learn new skills quickly and work with a minimum of supervision
· Able to author papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals
