Objective: The available post is for a Postdoctoral Position for 24 months to support the Investigator’s research programme in cancer research.

Project background and description: The Centre for Systems Medicine and the Department of Physiology and Medical Physics investigate cell fate decisions between life and death. Their mission is to provide a translational research environment to identify signalling processes implicated in human disease and to utilize systems biology and mathematical approaches in combination with quantitative experimentation in order to develop new prognostic tools for the treatment of cancer.
As part of the FP7 APO -DECIDE consortium activities, we will develop novel and translational systems medicine strategies to predict colorectal cancer responsiveness to chemotherapy.
The applicant will conduct quantitative intracellular measurements of apoptosis signalling kinetics in isolated cancer cell lines using advanced fluorescence imaging (WP5). In addition, the applicant will be involved in the processing and analysis of large scale clinical and pre-clinical cellular imaging data in order to extract quantitative information that can be used in systems modelling activities (WP3). The project will require an excellent understanding of cell death and survival signalling, in particular apoptosis signalling, and associated photonics technologies.

Further duties of this post will include:
• Complying with statutory legislation and Department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
• Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time
• Representing the best interests of the Department/RCSI at all times
• Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time.

The position will be available from November 1st, 2012.

Person Specification: The candidate should have a PhD in Cell Biology, Systems Biology, Biophysics or a related field. (S)he should have significant research experience in the subject areas described above as documented by publications and/or seminars and awards. (S)he needs to be able to independently plan and conduct a research project and to integrate into a strongly interdisciplinary research environment.

Salary: The successful candidate will be appointed on the salary scale at a point commensurate with qualifications and experience.
