Description

Post-doctoral Research Fellows: Neuroscience and Biomedical Signal Processing

School of Biological Sciences / Institute of Sound and Vibration Research

Applications are invited for two BBSRC/EPSRC funded Post-doctoralResearch Fellows to develop a joint research project funded by theBBSRC/EPSRC between Dr Philip Newland (School of Biological Sciences)and Dr David Simpson and Prof Robert Allen (Institute of Sound andVibration Research) on the neural control of limb movement in locusts. One position, based in the School of Biological Sciences, is for threeyears and ideally would suit a researcher with a background inneuroscience. The second position will be based in the Institute forSound and Vibration Research and is for two years. You will requireexpertise in biomedical signal processing and/or computationalneurobiology/mathematical neuroscience.

The objective of the study is to understand how the nervous system of ananimal, the desert locust, is able to produce precise movements of itslimbs, by using established signal processing techniques to study thenon-linear properties of the neural network that produces and controlslimb movement. The project will make use of combinedelectrophysiological, imaging, and signal processing techniques tounderstand how specific interneurones or their individual branchescontribute to limb control.

The School of Biological Sciences(www.sbs.soton.ac.uk/research/index.php) and the Institute for Sound andVibration Research (http://www.isvr.soton.ac.uk/spcg/) both encourageinterdisciplinary approaches in the life sciences. You will haverecently obtained a PhD in a relevant area ideally neuroscience, pharmacology, biomedical signal processing or neuroengineering. Youshould be an innovative scientist, a good team-worker and an excellentcommunicator, keen to develop multidisciplinary research.
