Applications are invited for a position of post-doctoral research fellowfor three years between 2008-2011 in the group lead by Dr. MikkoVähäsöyrinki and prof. Matti Weckström, Department of Physical Sciencesand Biocenter Oulu, University of Oulu, Finland
JOB DESCRIPTION
The appointee will be expected to conduct research as a part of amultidisciplinary research team focused on studying neural mechanisms ofinformation processing. Peripheral visual system and downstream gangliaof the insect brain will be used as an animal model. The appointee willbe given possibilities to develop her/his own interests within thegeneral framework of the research group.
We have good facilities for research at single cell, network and wholeanimal level. Methods used in the research range from in vitro and invivo electrophysiology at single cell level to extracellular populationrecordings combined with closed-loop behavioral paradigms. Mathematicalmodeling and computational neuroscience methods form essential part ofour research approach and this may also be part of the research done bythe appointee. We are actively collaborating with several otherlaboratories abroad, and the work may also include visits orcollaboration with those groups.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
a) A completed PhD in biophysics, physics, theoretical physics,neuroscience, or a related suitable discipline. Applications are alsowelcomed from students who will obtain their PhD degree in the immediate future.
b) Practical experience of electrophysiology either at single cell ornetwork level. Modelling experience is considered an advantage.
c) The ability to communicate effectively and clearly in English, bothorally and in writing
d) Commitment and self-motivation to work according to high standardsand in challenging projects
e) Ability to work in an independent fashion but also act as a member ofa multidisciplinary research team.
