Description
NEUROPEPTIDE REGULATION OF NETWORK ACTIVITY IN THALAMUS AND CEREBRAL CORTEX
Our research is aimed at determining the factors that help switch theforebrain between sleep and arousal. Specifically, we are interested ininvestigating the role of different neurotransmitters, in particularneuropeptides, in controlling firing pattern in thalamus and cerebralcortex. To this end, we make use of spontaneously active slicepreparations. By using a combination of electrophysiological techniques(extra- and intracellular recordings, patch clamp whole cellrecordings), we can follow the effect of a transmitter from the intactnetwork down to determining the conductances involved. Since networkactivity is the product both of the inherent electrical properties ofthe neurones as well as their synaptic connectivity, we also usehistochemical techniques (in situ hybridisation, immunohistochemistry)to determine the anatomical location of the signalling moleculesinvolved.
