Job Description

Postdoctoral Research Position Multiscale Modeling of Catalytic and Electrocatalytic Surfaces

NOTICE OF VACANCY
Applied Sciences Laboratory, Spokane
Institute for Shock Physics
Washington State University

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is immediately available for a creative, self-motivated researcher in a multidisciplinary project with a role to implement nanoscale to micron-scale models of catalytic and electroctalytic reactions on surfaces. The project involves large-scale modeling and combining first-principles calculated reaction kinetics to larger length scale in parallel computing environment to address applied research problems with ties to industry and federal research projects. Individuals with strong research accomplishments in chemistry, surface science, chemical or materials engineering are encouraged to apply.

Only applicants who are currently in the U.S. and meet the following minimum qualifications will be considered for the position:
• A very recent Ph.D. degree in theoretical chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, or related discipline
• Proficiency in at least one programming language such as C++/FORTRAN, numerical modeling using MATLAB or similar tools, and working experience in compiling and running programs in Linux cluster environment is required
• Experience with VASP, CASTEP, DMOl Solids or related density functional theory calculations of solids and surfaces
• Strong background in transition state theory, transition state search and chemical kinetics in multichannel competitive reactions at interfaces
• Exposure to classical molecular dynamics simulation of ions in liquid, electrochemical surfaces, quantum chemistry methods for electron transfer in solvated species is a plus.
• Graduate or recent post-graduate experience at a U.S. Academic Institution or National Laboratory who are currently in the U.S.
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, Good judgment, clear sense of purpose, and accountability

The ability and interest to pursue challenging, interdisciplinary problems, and the ability to deliver proof-of-concept results are essential. Individuals with a strong desire to work in applied research within a contract research organization, and who are comfortable working within a milestone-driven project-management environment are encouraged to apply. This is an ideal position for a creative, self-motivated individual.

The Institute for Shock Physics and the Spokane-based Applied Sciences Laboratory provide excellent opportunity for growth and professional success. The salary structure is nationally competitive. Other benefits include health/dental insurance, vacation/medical leave, retirement plans, and access to all University facilities. Our computing facility consists of large computational clusters with 3 Teraflops computing power. This position will be located on the WSU Spokane campus near downtown Spokane, Washington.

THE APPLIED SCIENCES LABORATORY
The Applied Sciences Laboratory (ASL) is a self sustaining, contract research organization that conducts a broad range of applied research projects for government agencies and private corporations, including the development of commercial applications.

ASL combines the creativity of academic research with the agility and customer focus of private industry. ASL’s focus is on applied research and technology related to energy, national security, and advanced materials and sensors. The scientific underpinnings for these projects are in materials science, optical science, solid mechanics, and computational modeling and simulations.

Further information about ASL may be found at www.asl.wsu.edu.

THE INSTITUTE FOR SHOCK PHYSICS
A multidisciplinary research organization within the College of Sciences, ISP undertakes a broad range of fundamental scientific activities related to understanding condensed matter response under dynamic and static high pressures. Washington State University has a long and distinguished history of conducting research in shock wave science. In 1997, the Institute was established by the Department of Energy (DOE) to ensure a strong, long-term academic base for the DOE’s national security mission.

Continuum-to-Atomic level understanding is the pervading theme of research activities that emphasize integration of innovative experiments with theoretical and computational advances. Multidisciplinary efforts that combine expertise in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemistry are underway to address several exciting and challenging scientific problems. In addition to the research faculty within the Institute, students and faculty from several departments within the Colleges of Science and Engineering participate in the Institute’s research projects. Excellent research interactions are in place with the DOE / NNSA National Laboratories: Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, and Sandia.

The state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities are housed in the Shock Physics Building. Inaugurated in 2003, the building was designed specifically for shock wave research and represents a unique facility among academic institutions. The major experimental research facilities available for studying physical and chemical phenomena over a large range of length and time scales include the Impact Laboratory, Laser Shock Laboratory, Static High Pressure Laboratory, and the Compact Pulsed Power Facility. Among the Institute’s research capabilities is a Computational Facility designed to complement the experimental effort.

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY
Washington State University, one of the two research universities in the state, was founded in 1890 as the state’s land-grant institution and is located in Pullman with regional campuses in Spokane, Vancouver and the Tri-Cities. It is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive University with a strong emphasis on excellence in research and education. Current enrollment is approximately 21,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional student FTEs, with approximately 5,600 faculty and staff. The University offers approximately 4300 courses in 150 undergraduate, and more than 70 graduate, degree programs. Academically the University is organized into 10 colleges (Agriculture, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences; Business; Education; Engineering and Architecture; Honors; Liberal Arts; Nursing; Pharmacy; Sciences; Veterinary Medicine) and a Graduate School.

SPOKANE
Spokane is the second largest city in Washington. The population is approximately 200,000 and there are over 400,000 citizens in the greater metropolitan area. It is the heart of the Inland Northwest, known for its beautiful outdoor recreational attractions. Spokane is 75 miles from Pullman. Washington State University has a location at the downtown River Point Campus location on the Spokane River with an enrollment of approximately 1,400 students in selected fields. Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University and Whitworth College are nearby. The largest employers are Fairchild Air Force base, a combination of hospitals and health care providers, and Kaiser Aluminum. Other industries include Agilent Technologies, Alcatel, Avista, Getronics, Itron, Telect, World Wide Packets, General DynamicsItronix, F5 Networks, and Honeywell.
