Description
Postdoctoral Research Assistant (ref. 13847)
Based in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, working in thelaboratories of Dr Eamonn Kelly and Professor Graeme Henderson, the aimof this Wellcome Trust project is to study agonist-specific mechanismsof mu-opioid receptor (MOPr) desensitisation.
You will investigate the phenomenon of functional selectivity at MOPr.It is now thought that different agonists can induce different activeconformational states of G protein-coupled receptors such as MOPr. Thisphenomenon, termed functional selectivity, may also extend to theprocess of MOPr desensitization with different agonists inducingdesensitization by different molecular mechanisms. This may explain thedifferential ability of MOPr agonists such as morphine and DAMGO toinduce tolerance to the euphoric and analgesic effects of these drugs inthe intact organism. You will use a range of biochemical, molecular andpharmacological techniques to study the molecular basis for thesedifferences. Given the timescale needed for completion of the project, you should already possess substantial experience in the relevanttechniques. You should also have or be working towards a PhD inmolecular neuropharmacology.
