Description
Biology and biophysics of actin cortex regrowth
We currently have an opening for a post-doctoral position in the generalarea of cell biology and biophysics.
The cell cortex is a network of actin, myosin and associated proteinsthat underlies the plasma membrane and determines the shape of animalcells. Despite the physiological importance of the actin cortex, surprisingly little is known about its formation and subsequentregulation. We propose to use blebs, a type of cell protrusion presentduring cytokinesis and motility in 3D environments, as a tool to followde novo cortex formation. Blebs form and retract in minutes, areoriginally devoid of a cortex, but assemble one prior to retraction bymyosin motors. (See Charras et al, Nature, 2005 May 19;435(7040):365-9and Charras et al, J Cell Biol, 2006 Nov 6;175(3):477-90 ).
The goal of this project is to examine how cortical actin is nucleatedand tethered to the membrane, and the relation between cortexultrastructure and physical properties. This project will use molecularand cell biology techniques, spinning disk confocal and scanningelectron microscopy, and experimental biophysics techniques.
The London Centre for Nanotechnology has state-of-the-art facilities andhas significant expertise in surface micropatterning for live cellculture, scanning probe microscopy, and optical microscopy of livingcells. Strong links with the biology departments of UCL make thisproject truly multi-disciplinary.
Candidates should have a PhD in subjects such as Biology or Biophysics. This project involves a significant experimental component. Remunerationis according to University Guidelines and includes London weighting.
This project is a collaboration with partners in Dresden (Germany),Paris (France), and Montreal (Canada) and will necessitate some travel.
