A postdoctoral position is available to study the molecular mechanism(s)involved in preventing neurite growth over inhibitory substrates usingin vitro assays and in vivo after spinal cord injury. We are usingprimary neuronal: mixed glial cultures and stripe assays to examine theroles of several intracellular signaling pathways in cellular mechanismsof neuronal growth cone motility and guidance, using advanced live cellimaging, molecular and biochemical approaches. Experiments will involvethe study of signaling intermediaries via FRET/fluorescent-tagging usingviral vectors. Subsequent translation of findings in this assay tospinal cord injury in vivo models will be performed using genetherapeutic strategies with lenti- or adeno-associated viral vectortechnology (including siRNA) and will involve surgery, histology andstereological analysis by computer microscopy. The postdoctoral scholarwill be part of a multi-institutional research group(http://www.miamiproject.miami.edu) which involves frequent interactionswith a broad range of scientists with expertise in human genetics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, immunology, molecular pharmacology, rehabilitative medicine and clinical pathology.

Experience in molecularbiological techniques is required including RNA and DNA extractions,PCR, RT-PCR, functional promoter assays and cloning. Previous work inprimary neuronal cultures, intracellular second messenger signalingpathways, siRNA and/or CNS injury models is desired. Excellentcommunication and organizational skills preferred. Candidates must havepublished at least one first author paper in an English languagejournal.
