Division: Signalling and Functional Genomics
Position: Postdoc in High-throughput screening (Ref-No. 90/2008)
Tasks:
The German Cancer Research Center is a member of the HelmholtzAssociation of National Research Centers and performs research in theareas of basic and translational cancer biology. The institute hasstrong links with Heidelberg University and other research institutionsin the Rhein-Neckar area. You will be working in an international anddynamic environment, have access to a broad range of further educationcourses and the possibility to contribute to projects at the frontier ofcancer research.
In animals, processes such as homeostasis, cell proliferation,differentiation and survival are regulated by cellular signalingpathways. In order to guarantee the temporal and spatial control ofthese pathways and to avoid the occurrence of diseases such as cancerthey must be tightly regulated. Our research is directed towards thesystematic elucidation and characterization of signaling pathwaycomponents. Our lab uses genomic and genetic approaches in modelorganisms and human cells to analyze gene functions on a genome-widescale (Bartscherer et al., Cell 2006; Mueller et al., Nature 2005). Wein particular focus on the analysis of conserved and disease-relatedsignaling pathways.
The project is part of a 3 Million Euro funded EU collaborative projectundertaken in eight research groups in five European countries andfocuses on the analysis of developmental molecular pathways inDrosophila. Since cancer is often caused by the aberrant activation ofconserved signal transduction pathways we aim to use Drosophila as amodel for human oncogenic pathways. The project will involve theestablishment of high-throughput assays for the analysis ofdevelopmental pathways in Drosophila and the identification of novelsignaling components by large-scale RNAi and compound screening methods.In addition cell biological and biochemical methods will be applied tofollow up the characterization of the identified signaling components.
Job Profile:
The applicant should be highly motivated, enthusiastic about science andhold a Ph.D. in biology or a related field. The applicant should alsohave a proven track record in molecular and cellular biology as well asexperience with Drosophila genetics. In addition strong quantitativeskills for the analysis of high-throughput data sets and experience ingenomic analysis of cellular signaling pathways are necessary.
The position is available as soon as possible and is initially limiteduntil April 30, 2011.
