Description
Multi-disciplinary Cancer Research Opportunities in MRI/MRSI: postdoctoral data analyst, research assistant in tumour biology and PhD student
University of Sheffield
Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Research Associate and Research Assistant posts and a PhD studentship within a team of multi-disciplinary investigators working on a new initiative funded by Cancer Research UK & EPSRC, in association with the MRC and Department of Health (England), for development of new techniques in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as bio-markers for clinical development of tumour vascular-targeting agents. These agents form a new class of anti-cancer agents that complement existing treatments, such as chemo- and radio-therapy. For further information on vascular targeting see:
www.shef.ac.uk/medicine/research/sections/oncology/surgical-oncology/unitresearch/tmg
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Academic Unit of Surgical Oncology, Medical School
Ref: R07444
Grade: 7
Salary: £27,999 – £33,432 per annum
The successful candidate will work on developing mathematical models to analyse kinetic data derived from imaging studies, in order to extract relevant biological parameters that can be used as bio-markers for monitoring the efficacy of novel tumour vascular targeting agents in clinical trials. Data will be derived from high field MRI systems and a Dynamic Nuclear Polarisation (DNP) unit capable of many thousand-fold sensitivity enhancement for MRI/MRSI relative to normal thermal polarization levels. Research will be carried out in close collaboration with biologists and senior MR specialists, within the research team, and there will be opportunities for clinical collaborations. Candidates should have a PhD in mathematics, engineering or a physical science, with a background in data analysis and computer programming. Some knowledge of biological systems would be an advantage. Training will be provided for specialized techniques.
The post is available from 1st December 2009 fixed term until 30th November 2013.
Research Assistant
Academic Unit of Surgical Oncology, Medical School
Ref: R07445
Grade: 6
Salary: £23,449 – £26,391 per annum
The successful candidate will assist a post-doctoral scientist in carrying out tumour biology experiments designed to validate novel MRI/MRSI techniques for development of biomarkers, working closely with imaging specialists in a multi-disciplinary team. Candidates should have a first degree (or equivalent qualification) in a biological subject, with a basic knowledge of the physical sciences. Full training will be provided but some experience of laboratory research would be an advantage.
The post is available from 1st December 2009 and is for a fixed term until 30th November 2013.
PhD Studentship
Academic Units of Surgical Oncology & Radiology, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
PhD studentship (Hyperpolarized xenon MRI):
The successful applicant will join a group with a strong international track record in hyperpolarized gas MRI for lung imaging. The student will develop hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI for investigation of blood flow rate and the tumour microenvironment. An excellent first degree or similar qualification in physics or related science, with a strong background and interest in biology/medicine is essential. Some experience of NMR/MRI would be useful but not essential. For further information please contact Dr Jim Wild (j.m.wild@sheffield.ac.uk):

How to apply for the PhD Studentship:
Please complete a University Postgraduate Research Application form and provide at least two references. To download the application form please visit:
