job description:

We are looking for a candidate to develop an original research project on “Role of TGFbeta in Pancreatic and Gastrointestinal Cancers” in a very dynamic junior research group. Transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) is known to play a crucial role in tumor-growth control. It is commonly accepted that during the early stages of tumorigenesis, TGFbeta acts as a tumor suppressor. As the tumor progresses, TGFbeta stimulates tumor progression. In our lab, we investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms supporting this functional duality of TGFbeta using genetically engineered mice. In all, our work could allow to consider new anti-cancer drugs targeting TGFbeta signaling.

INSERM is the only French public organization entirely dedicated to biological, medical and public health research (“French NIH”) http://www.inserm.fr/en/inserm/.
Our group is supported by the “AVENIR PROGRAM”, a very selective research program for the promotion of young researchers. This program supports young researchers of high scientific level who have exciting and creative research projects http://www.eva.inserm.fr/AppelsOffres/Textes%20AOs%2007/ANG/AO%20Avenir%202007%20anglais.pdf. Our laboratory is located inside Léon Bérard Center, in a research building built in 2009. Léon-Bérard Cancer Center is a private, non-profit, comprehensive hospital dedicated to cancer treatment and research. It is affiliated with the French Federation of Cancer Centers (20 hospitals, created by government ordinance in 1945). The cancer center has become a leader in its field, and a pole of reference for the treatment of cancer in France. It has received full, unreserved agreement of the French National Organization for Healthcare Quality & Evaluation http://www.lyon.fnclcc.fr/english_version/index_eng.html.

Lyon, the second biggest town in France (1.2 million people) is a very attractive place. It is 1h50 far from Paris by train, 1h00 drive from the Alpes (skiing, hiking…) and 3 hours drive from the Mediterranean sea. Nearly 102,000 students, in a full range of fields and academic institutions, make Lyon the second-largest university town in France. Four universities and a number of specialized graduate schools offer a broad spectrum of studies. Higher education in Lyon is recognized the world over for its quality and expertise in health, chemicals, engineering, information technology, law and social sciences http://www.lyon.fr/vdl/sections/en/.
Applicants with a recent PhD and an experience in mouse models are encouraged. At least one accepted first author publication is preferable. The candidate will be experienced in autonomous scientific work. In cooperation with the P.I., the candidate will be asked to design an original project in harmony with the general scientific orientation of our group. Team oriented attitude and good communication skills are essential in our laboratory. Good skills in English language are required (papers redaction and oral communications). The position can start as early as January 2010.
