Project title: Immunogenetics of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR) and HLA-C in pre-eclampsia
We are seeking a post-doctoral Research Associate to join the Division of Immunology in the Reproductive Immunobiology group headed by Professor Ashley Moffett. The group comprises eight scientists working on the role of the maternal immune system in regulating placental development and function. This project, funded by the British Heart Foundation, extends our work on how the maternal uterine immune system, especially the Natural Killer (NK) cells, regulates placentation through recognition of MHC Class I ligands on the invading fetal trophoblast cells (Moffett and Loke, Nat Rev Immunol 2006; Hiby et al J Exp Med 2004; Hum Reprod 2008 – www.path.cam.ac.uk/research/investigators/moffett/research). We have already found that certain maternal KIR/fetal HLA-C combinations are associated with diseases of pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia and recurrent miscarriage.
This is a combined study using immunogenetics of pathological pregnancies and cell biology to define the outcome of different KIR/HLA ligand interactions. The post holder will work closely with other members of the group and with our outside collaborators. Familiarity with PCR techniques that are used for genotyping and with some statistical knowledge will be useful. Cell culture experiments and FACS analysis with fusion proteins will also be used to study maternal allorecognition of fetal MHC proteins. Training will be given as required.
The maximum starting salary for this position will be £27,183.
