Description:
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center http://www.fhcrc.org/, led by Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Lee Hartwell, is a premier research institute located in Seattle, WA.
A quantitative biology laboratory in the Division of Basic Sciences is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow who has a strong background in experimental physics or engineering and now desires to study biological problems.
We are interested in using experimental biology, quantitative measurements, and mathematical analysis to examine “cooperation,” because cooperation can be found virtually everywhere: between different cell types in our body, different individuals in a population, or different species in mutualistic interactions. How can cooperation survive the invasion of cheaters that take but not give? How does cooperation evolve? We plan to study cooperation initially using an engineered system in which two complementary types of yeast cells can only survive when both types are present. Conceptually simple and experimentally tractable, the system can be used to quantitatively address a variety of questions on cooperation and to bridge game theory with experimental biology.
We are also interested in studying the heterogeneous response to starvation at the single-cell level using microfluidics and microscopy. More information about the group may be found at

Qualifications:
PhD in physics or engineering. Besides the ability to think creatively and critically and the desire to learn biology, the applicant ideally should have lab experience that includes designing and performing experiments, building and maintaining instruments, writing computer programs to do simulations and to automate data acquisition, and constructing mathematical models. This is an ideal opportunity for an imaginative and driven individual who seeks intellectual challenges at the interface of multiple disciplines.
