Description:
Postdoc position in the group of Björn Schroeder at the MDC (Berlin-Buch): We study the recently identified TMEM16 / ANO family of ion channels.
Calcium activated chloride channels (CaCCs) are important for the regulation of sensory transduction, epithelial secretion, neuronal excitability, smooth muscle contraction and vascular tone. (Hartzell C, Annu Rev Physiol 67, 719-758). TMEM16A has recently been identified as a CaCC (Schroeder BC, Cell 134, 1019-1029). It is the founding member of the new TMEM16 / ANO family of ion channels. Except the function of TMEM16A and TMEM16B as CaCCs little is known about this family. Mice containing a deletion in the TMEM16A gene die few days after birth. Gnathodiaphyseal dysplasia, a rare disease characterized by bone fragility, and limb girdle muscular dystrophy can both be caused by mutations in the human TMEM16E gene. TMEM16J shows a very strong regulation by the tumor suppressor p53 and some TMEM16 proteins are highly upregulated in specific forms of cancer.
To gain insight into TMEM16 regulation, interaction partners, physiological functions and involvement in human diseases we use a large variety of techniques including in vivo imaging, electrophysiology, and mouse genetics. As part of the project we expect to get a better understanding of the biology of vision and other sensory systems as well as cystic fibrosis.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with interest in ion channels, neuroscience, and transport processes who want to work in an interdisciplinary and challenging research area. Applicants should hold a PhD degree in Molecular Neuroscience or related disciplines. A strong background in electrophysiology is required.
Funding is available for initially 2 years with the option for subsequent prolongation.
