The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). The provision of advanced scientific training represents one of the core missions of the EMBL and is achieved through EICAT, which offers an integrated spectrum of excellence-driven activities, tailored for scientists both within EMBL (internal programme) and the scientific community (external programme). The external training programme includes the widely recognised EMBL Courses and Conference programme, the Teacher training programme ELLS, and the Visiting Scientists and Scholars Programme, with a total staff of 12-15 persons. Following the recent opening of the EMBL Advanced Training Centre (ATC), the post holder will assume broad responsibilities in the scientific and strategic management of these activities and thus play a leading role in advanced scientific training in Europe. The main duties & responsibilities of the post holder will include:
• Coordinating EMBL’s external scientific training activities across all five sites of EMBL (Grenoble, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Hinxton, Monterotondo)
• Strategically developing EMBL’s international position through a world-class programme of scientific courses, conferences and workshops
• Developing relationships with private and public funding bodies
Applicants must have a PhD in the Life Sciences with a keen interest and insight into contemporary biology. Post-graduate experience as well as professional experience in a scientific environment is essential. S/he must possess demonstrated proficiency and success in scientific management. The ideal candidate will possess proven analytical skills with expertise in developing and applying strategies as well as related procedures and policies. This also requires the ability to write grant applications and other official documents. Further more demonstrated qualities in leadership and team management as well as collaborative skills are essential. The postholder must have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to think creatively. Perfect English, both spoken and written, is essential and a good working knowledge of German and/or French is desirable.
