A postdoctoral fellow is being sought for participation research projects designed to determine the pathogenic role(s) of tau protein in neurodegenerative disease. This highly interdisciplinary project will involve studies that will help to better understand how pathological changes in tau protein cause cell dysfunction in CNS neurons. A multitude of experimental approaches that includes protein biochemistry, in vitro cell culture, immunology, and in vivo animal modeling will be used to better understand tau's role in tauopathies including, but not limited to, Alzheimer's disease and Traumatic Brain Injury. Training will be provided in techniques as needed. The fellow will also be trained and participate in collaborative experimental design and execution, analysis of data and scholarly communication of results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. This position is located at 333 Bostwick Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI.

This is an entry-level position for postdoctoral study. It requires a doctoral degree in biological science, doctoral degrees in neuroscience are preferable. The successful candidate should have a basic understanding of standard molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell culture techniques, although other skill sets will also be considered on an individual basis. Basic experience in data generation and handling, data interpretation, documentation of laboratory procedures and results, experience employing standard computer software is necessary. Good command of written and spoken English is a determining factor.

A candidate with knowledge, understanding and/or experience with protein analyses (e.g. Western blotting and ELISAs), microscopy (fluorescence and brightfield), tissue culture (both cell lines and primary neurons) is preferable. Knowledge of neuroanatomy, tissue sectioning, and immunohistochemistry are highly desired. The successful applicant should be proficient with basic statistical analyses as would normally be expected for biomedical research.
