Institution:
Department of Chemistry, Imperial College London
Position:
Research Associate in Microfluidic Separation of Proteins for Single Cell Proteomics
Closing date:17 August 2007
Job Description:
Imperial College is ranked in the top ten universities of the world, according to the 2006 Times Higher Education Supplement league tables.
A position is available for a full time Research Associate in the EPSRC-funded multidisciplinary Single Cell Proteomics (SCP) consortium (www.singlecellproteomics.ac.uk) based at Imperial College London. This consortium includes investigators from the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, the Institute of Cancer Research and the London Research Institute of Cancer Research UK and operates under the auspices of the Chemical Biology Centre (CBC). The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of twelve full time researchers working on the development and application of tools and technologies for the study of protein levels, distribution and chemical state from single cells. This research is focused on peptides and proteins, in particular membrane proteins, but may also involve the study of other bio-molecular systems.
The successful candidate will focus on developing and applying novel microfabricated systems for proteomic analysis; specifically microfluidic analogues of 2-dimenisonal electrophoresis which will be used to separate proteins found and extracted from single cells. This will also involve integrating such separation systems with optical detection tools and affinity chromatography modules, both developed by the team. The position is based in the Chemistry Department on South Kensington Campus and will be supervised jointly by Professor Andrew de Mello, Dr Oscar Ces and Professor David Klug.
You will have a PhD in chemistry, physics or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience. You will also have experience in as many of the following areas as possible: Development of electrophoresis systems, separation of proteins and peptides using electrophoresis including capillary electrophoresis and two-dimensional electrophoresis, microfabrication and photolithography, design and application of microfluidic systems for chemical and/or biological analysis. Practical experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary research team is also an advantage.
Salary Starting Salary: £24,570 - £31,240 per annum
Fixed term appointment until August 2009
