Description
A post-doctoral position is available at the Institute of Glycomics, towork on Burkholderia pseudomallei. This is a facultative intracellularpathogen, which causes macrophages to fuse into giant cells, generatesactin tails, and has complex interactions with host signalling cascadesand responses. B. pseudomallei causes melioidosis, a disease withsimilarities to TB, in that it can cause latent infections, but it mayalso progress to rapidly fatal systemic disease. Meliodosis can manifestin almost any host organ (lung, liver, spleen, bones, brain, parotid and prostate).
Early career post-doctoral scientists, recent PhD graduates, andcandidates close to submission are encouraged to apply.
Competitive candidates will have a PhD in Molecular Microbiology,Bacterial Pathogenicity, Cell Biology, or Molecular Immunology.Familiarity with one or more of the following skills is essential:bacterial genetics and mutagenesis, in vitro and in vivo infectionstudies (preferably examining host responses), cell culture ofimmortalized and primary cells, expression analysis by RT-PCR, ELISA andWestern blot, fluorescence microscopy, FACS analysis, protein expressionand purification. Evidence of accurate record keeping, preparation ofresearch outputs for communication purposes, and oral and writtencommunication skills, is also essential. Applicants must have provenresearch ability, evidence of research potential and potential forfuture development, and evidence of ability to work cooperatively withothers. It is also desirable that applicants have demonstratedadministrative skills.
