Job Description:
A postdoctoral position is available immediately for a recent PhD to work as part of the Anti-Wolbachia (AWOL) consortium, a multinational scientific effort to control Lymphatic Filariasis, a disease caused by infection with the nematode Brugia malayi, by targeting Wolbachia, an obligate mutualistic endosymbiont residing in the worms.
This position offers opportunities to participate in national and international conferences. Publication of results in top level peer-reviewed journals will be strongly encouraged.
The aim of the postdoctoral work is bioinformatic identification of an essential Wolbachia gene set and potential Wolbachia drug targets which could be used in high-throughput screens by other members of the AWOL consortium.
Primary Responsibilities:
Carry out independent research aimed at computationally identifying and ranking potentially essential gene products in Wolbachia.
Assist in the design and implementation of software and databases to catalog identified essential bacterial genes and facilitate their analysis by molecular biologists.
Technical Expertise:
Experience with relevant bioinformatics methodology, including comparative sequence analysis, database searching, sequence clustering, ortholog identification and machine learning.
Programming skills in one or more of the following languages: Perl, Python, Java or C++.
