Postdoctoral Research Associate
University of Edinburgh - GeoSciences
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of Amazonian ecosystem modelling and ecology. You will join the School of GeoSciences, University of Edinburgh and also become part of two research groups at the School, 'Tropical Ecosystems Past and Present' (TEPP) and the Edinburgh University Biosphere-Atmosphere Programme (EUBAP); both groups form part of the Research Institute for Global Change, one of three such institute that make up the School. TEPP and EUBAP comprise about 40 researchers from the atmospheric sciences, soil sciences, forestry, plant ecology and plant physiology fields; TEPP also includes researchers from nearby research institutes such as the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. Our research is focused on understanding the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems (from the Tropics to the Boreal region) in response to global change.
You will join an EU-funded research consortium project ('Amazalert') comprising contributions from 16 research institutes from South America and Europe. The project is focused on understanding and improving climate and vegetation process understanding in Amazonia and also linking this expertise with land use change and relevant policy making. A key science goal of the work is to improve dynamic global vegetation models as applied to Amazonian rainforest.
You will be soon to obtain or have a PhD in Amazonian ecosystem ecology. You will have experience of global vegetation model testing and development, preferably with a focus on tropical rainforests.. Demonstrable relevant field work experience and data analysis expertise are also required. Language skills in Portuguese or Spanish are highly desirable, together with a track record in being able to work as part of a team distributed in different research institutes, internationally.
You will: a) take responsibility for model testing and development, in particular using the land surface model Jules, working with new and existing datasets, and interacting with other groups working on similar models from the EU and Brazil; (b) advise on and help the delivery of new field data collection that is focussed on model development, doing this in collaboration with the lead field partners in Brazil and the overall consortium lead organisation, Alterra (Netherlands). You will be expected to develop and write scientific papers for publication in leading journals; this process is likely to involve papers that you lead and that you contribute to collaboratively, as part of the wider project.
