Introduction
The Trustees of the Crafts Study Centre wish to make available a post doctoral Fellowship in Modern Crafts to be located at the Crafts Study Centre, University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, Surrey, England.
It is intended that the research will align the interests of the researcher with the collections of the Crafts Study Centre. Further information on these collections is available at www.csc.ucreative.ac.uk and via the website of the Visual Arts Data Service www.vads.ac.uk . The outcome of the period of research should be defined in the application, and it could include, for example: the completion of a research project already in hand; an extended essay published in a peer-review journal or other appropriate publication; a lecture and web-based publication facilitated by the Crafts Study Centre; an exhibition essay or catalogue.
The Fellow will also make a contribution to the academic life of the University, for example by contributing to the teaching (via a seminar or lecture, for example) of the University's PhD cohort or by a presentation to the University's Annual Research Conference. These engagements will be agreed at the beginning of the Fellowship.
The research should make a substantive contribution to the study of craft history based on original research into a specific archive or group of objects held by the Centre. The outcome should be of particular relevance to a Higher Education Institution audience and programme. The Crafts Study Centre must be fully acknowledged in any public outcome of the research.
The Fellow will report to the Director of the Crafts Study Centre, Professor Simon Olding, and a 'hot desk' will be provided over the course of the project in the Centre. Access to the collections will be managed by the Collections Manager, Jean Vacher. The Chair of the Crafts Study Centre, Dr Glenn Adamson will act as Expert Mentor. It is anticipated that one day a week would be spent at the V & A Museum to make use of the National Art Library and the Research Department resources there. The Fellow will be expected to work at the Centre for around two days per week.
An application will be by covering letter and a detailed proposal outlining the area of research (making special reference to the collections of the Crafts Study Centre that will form the basis of the study) and the nature of the proposed research and public outcomes.
The application should be sent to the Director of the Crafts Study Centre ( solding@ucreative.ac.uk ) by noon on Friday 22 June 2012. The decision of the Crafts Study Centre selection panel (Chair, Dr Glenn Adamson; Alison Britton, Professor Simon Olding, Jean Vacher) will be announced on Friday 29 June by e mail to all applicants. The panel may seek to interview applicants.
