Replication of major human pathogens such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV -1) is potently suppressed by intrinsic and adaptive immunity strategies of the host. Consequently HIV -1 has evolved gene products that allow circumvention of these immune responses. One focus of the laboratory is on deciphering the mechanism by which the HIV -1 protein Vpu antagonizes the restriction imposed by the host factor CD317/tetherin to the release of mature virus particles (Goffinet et al. 2009 Cell Host & Microbe; Goffinet et al. 2010 J. Virol.; Schmidt et al. 2011 MBio; Fritz et al. 2012 Virology). Another goal is to understand how the HIV -1 protein Nef undermines mounting of adaptive immunity by interference with immune cell interactions of infected T lymphocytes (Pan et al. 2012 Blood; Stolp et al. 2009 Cell Host & Microbe). Open projects are available in both lines of research.

The Department of Infectious Diseases, Virology at the University Hospital Heidelberg, Germany offers a

postdoc position (TVL E13) for two years (extension possible)

starting summer 2012

in the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Oliver Fackler.

The successful candidate will have a strong background and practical experience in biochemical analyses of protein interactions and light microscopy. We expect a strong interest in cell biology, virology and immunology, creative and independent research, and a very high level of motivation. We offer interesting research topics with biomedical relevance in a stimulating and interactive scientific environment at an internationally competitive level. Please send your applications with full CV including list of publications and letter of motivation until June 14 to:
