Job Description:

Applications are invited for a Wellcome-funded post-doctoral position to work on the biochemistry and molecular biology of the unusual chaperonins of Mycobacteria.  The position is available for up to 22 months in the first instance, at a starting salary £24,402 - £29,138 a year (potential progression on performance once in post to £33,799 a year).

The successful applicant will join an active research group with interests in several aspects of prokaryotic stress responses.   This particular project is to examine the detailed structure-function relationships of the chaperonin proteins of two different Mycobacteria, with a view to understanding their roles in bacterial growth and pathogenesis.  The project is in collaboration with groups at UCL and St George's Hospital, and will involve working closely with these groups and with two PhD students who are already studying this system in Birmingham.

Requirements:
Expertise in protein biochemistry is required for this post, which will involve development and refining of purification and assay protocols for molecular chaperones, and extensive analysis of both wild-type and mutant proteins. Experience of relevant biochemical and biophysical methods is required. Familiarity with molecular chaperone and protein folding and/or molecular biology of bacterial pathogens is desirable, and good communication and team-working skills will also be expected.
