Job Description:

Regulation of Ca2+ handling by reactive oxygen species in human atrial fibrillation

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow who would like to develop their scientific skills in a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment. The focus of our research programme is to understand the role of nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species in the regulation of cardiac function in health and disease. We have shown that the main source of superoxide production and the likely cause of NOS dysfunction in atrial myocytes from patients with atrial fibrillation is a phagocytic-type NADPH oxidase (Kim et al. Circ Res 2005). In a prospective study in patients undergoing cardiac surgery we have recently identified myocardial NADPH oxidase activity as an independent predictor of atrial fibrillation in the post-operative period (Kim et al. 2007). We now want to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow to investigate the role of myocardial generation of reactive oxygen species in the electrical remodelling that is induced by atrial fibrillation in humans.

The successful candidate would need to have first-hand experience with cardiac cellular electrophysiology techniques; some expertise in confocal microscopy and molecular biology would be an advantage. He/she would need to be well-organised and able to interact with postdoctoral scientists and graduate students within our group, and with collaborating groups in the Department.
