CSIRO Plant Industry is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Post Doctoral Fellow to learn how plants sense and respond to soil microbial communities at the root-soil interface. You will be involved in contributing to improved knowledge of how eukaryotic cells perceive and respond to microbial communities to increase our ability to manage these processes through genetic manipulation to improve plant growth soil resource use efficiency and productivity in agricultural and natural field conditions. The basic findings will have implications for other areas of prokaryotic-eukaryotic biology in animals or plants.

•Make a difference through Excellence in Science!
•Excellent opportunity to work in a leading scientific institution with dedicated professionals
•Join CSIRO , Australia’s premier science & technology research organisation

The Position

CSIRO Plant Industry is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Post Doctoral Fellow to learn how plants sense and respond to soil microbial communities at the root-soil interface. You will be involved in contributing to improved knowledge of how eukaryotic cells perceive and respond to microbial communities to increase our ability to manage these processes through genetic manipulation to improve plant growth, soil resource use efficiency, and productivity in agricultural and natural field conditions. The basic findings will have implications for other areas of prokaryotic-eukaryotic biology in animals or plants.

Specifically you will:

•Conduct experiments in highly-controlled conditions to test if wheat and Brachypodium plants respond to microbial signals at the root soil interface
•Use soil microcosms to study the ecology of the root-soil interface over time, and test if root surface-signal interactions depend on plant genetics and root age
•Analyse data from experiments, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present at national and international meetings

Location: Black Mountain, Canberra, Australia
Salary: $75K- $82K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Ref no: ACT 12/00783
Tenure: 3 Years

To be successful you will have:

•PhD in Plant-Microbe Interactions, or other related discipline
•Demonstrated experience with microbiology methods, including culturing and molecular
•Demonstrated experience studying plant responses to biotic or abiotic factors, including whole-plant growth responses and cellular and molecular responses
