Description

We are looking for 1 Postdoc and 1 PhD Student to work in the Molecular Metabolic Research Group at the Institute of Human Genetics, University of Heidelberg.

Our group aims to identify and functionally characterize novel factors regulating cellular lipid metabolism. For this, we have established a number of cell-based functional assays and perform high-content microscopy screening in combination with gene expression based approaches. Ultimate goal is to identify novel genetic risk factors for lipid metabolic diseases and to gain a better understanding of molecular mechanisms leading to metabolic disease. The group is working in close cooperation with clinical partners as well as collaborating scientists at EMBL and Heidelberg University.

Successful individuals will work on the characterization of novel candidate genes identified in large-scale screening projects linked to familial hypercholesterolemia and the lysosomal storage disorder Niemann-Pick Type C. We seek highly motivated and team-oriented people interested in addressing interdisciplinary questions at the intersection of basic research and clinical medicine. Successful candidates will apply RNAi-screening, high throughput light microscopy, image processing and quantitative data analysis as well as biochemical and molecular biological techniques for in-depth studies on identified candidate genes. Applicants should have a degree in biology, biochemistry or medicine and ideally have experience in cell biology, molecular biology and fluorescence microscopy techniques. Fluency in English language is expected.

Positions are available immediately. The successful postdoctoral applicant will be offered an initial contract of 1 year with the possibility for extension for another two years.
