Position
Post-Doctoral Position in Transcriptional Regulatory Mechanisms in Human Disease
Location
Goettingen, Germany
Date Posted
Sep 22 2007
Description
Are you close to completing your Ph.D. (or M.D.) and interested in gaining experience abroad in a young laboratory doing high level cutting edge molecular biology? Then perhaps we can offer you the right environment to further develop your scientific skills in the quickly developing area of transcriptional regulation at one of the premier universities in Germany with a long standing tradition in the natural sciences.
What can we offer you? Excellent, modern research facilities on a medical university campus with excellent opportunities for collaboration with two Max Planck Institutes and with other world class researchers in the medical and biological faculties. In addition, as a small and growing research group, you will have our full support and commitment.
Although classical models of gene regulation have focused primarily on transcriptional initiation and the recruitment of RNA Polymerase II, many recent ground breaking studies have clearly demonstrated that a large proportion of genes are regulated at the level of transcriptional elongation (for example, see Guenther, et al., 2007, Cell 130:77-88). Our research is centered around the role of transcriptional elongation in the regulation of transcription using the TGF-beta/SMAD and nuclear hormone receptors as model systems for our work. This work has direct relevance for the pathogenesis of breast cancer, HIV infection and heart failure. Our research is presently performed exclusively using cell culture and in vitro models but may extend into model organisms in the coming years.
What are we looking for?
-A qualified individual (recently completed or close to completion of a Ph.D. or M.D.) with a proven record of scientific achievement (i.e. the publication or acceptance of at least one first author paper in a high level scientific journal)
-A commitment to teamwork and an interest in the molecular regulation of human disease
-An understanding of molecular biology and the ability to quickly learn new scientific techniques
-Flexibility and a willingness to apply for extramural post-doctoral funding
We have adequate laboratory space, outstanding facilities, excellent preliminary data and many ideas for potential post-doctoral projects. So, what is the catch? This position is dependent upon the attainment of extramural funding by the applicant. However, substantial help and suggestions for potential funding agencies will be provided. In particular, excellent funding opportunities exist for outstanding U.S. scientists to pursue post-doctoral research in Germany.
