Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Ref: 07380/KR
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant and a Technician to work on a Wellcome Trust funded project entitled ‘Exploiting the drug-activating properties of a novel trypanosomal nitroreductase in the search for new chemotherapeutic agents’. This study builds on our finding that pro-drugs used to treat Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, and Trypanosoma brucei, the parasite responsible for African sleeping sickness, are activated by a bacterial-like nitroreductase. The project will involve evaluating new nitro-based drugs for trypanocidal activity and determining whether the nitroreductase plays a role in drug resistance. A comprehensive biochemical/structural analysis of the nitroreductase will also be performed.
Candidates for the Postdoctoral Research Assistant position should have a PhD and proven research experience. For both positions a background in molecular parasitology and/or biochemistry is preferred. Experience with parasite culturing, recombinant DNA technology, protein purification and UV/VIS spectroscopy, would be desirable.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Shane Wilkinson (email s.r.wilkinson@qmul.ac.uk).
These are full-time, 3 year fixed-term Wellcome Trust funded posts. Salaries are dependent on qualifications, skills and experience (£30,968 – £32,690 per annum for the Postdoctoral Research Assistant).
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Asylum and Immigration Act 1999.
