Description
Research in the Ruthazer lab is focused on understanding the mechanismsby which neural activity during development refines the connectivity ofneuronal circuits. We use the retinotectal system of Xenopus tadpoles asour model system because of the great ease of in vivo time lapse imagingand single-cell transfection. In addition this system is well suited toin vivo electrophysiology in conjunction with direct visual stimulationand pharmacological manipulation. The lab is equipped with a custombuilt two-photon laser scanning microscope, electrophysiology rig, andbasic molecular and biochemical tools. The lab is funded by operatinggrants from the CIHR, NARSAD, March of Dimes and the EJLB Foundation andalso participates in the McGill Neuroengineering team grant onnanotechnology applications in neuroscience.
Current funded projects in the lab examine the role of cadherins inaxonal arbor stabilization, the control of dendritic morphogenesis andsynaptic plasticity by activity-dependent gene transcription, andmechanisms of LTD in the retinotectal projection. These projects use acombination of live imaging and electrophysiology together with geneticmanipulation to permit both descriptive and mechanistic analyses of theprocess of developmental remodeling of neural maps. As a postdoctoralfellow you would be expected to design and perform your own experimentson a project related to the development of neural circuits. Candidateswith electrophysiology or advanced imaging experience are especiallyencouraged to apply.
The position pays at the CIHR mandated level of $40,000 per year(postdocs are tax exempt in Canada/Quebec). Quebec provides free healthcare and excellent low-cost child care benefits.
