Description
This is a postdoctoral position to work on the evolution ofrecombination rate variation in humans.
In this project, we will use sperm typing in samples from ethnicallydiverse humans and from chimpanzees to measure the recombination rate ona fine scale and compare it to estimates based on linkage disequilibriumdata. The results will have broad implications for the interpretation ofpatterns of linkage disequilibrium, hence, for making inferences aboutnatural selection and/or the factors influencing the evolution ofrecombination hot spots in primates.
In addition to an interest in the evolution of recombination rate, theideal candidate should have excellent laboratory skills and beproficient in molecular genetics techniques, including allele specificPCR and real time PCR. Some background in population genetics or humangenetics would be a plus.
The candidate will have the opportunity to acquire a valuable set oflaboratory skills as well as to learn about population genetics dataanalyses. The project is a collaborative effort with the lab of MollyPrzeworski, which is located in the same building as mine. Moregenerally, our department enjoys a highly interactive and livelyintellectual environment that provides excellent opportunities forpostdoctoral training.
