Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the group of Dr James Locke in the Sainsbury Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, to carry out fundamental research in the field of microbial systems biology. The project will focus on understanding signal integration and single cell gene regulation dynamics in Cyanobacteria. The work will combine single cell time-lapse microscopy, modelling, and synthetic biology techniques to gain a quantitative understanding of how Cyanobacteria respond to and anticipate environmental signals. The project requires both experimental and quantitative skills. Although the candidate background may focus more heavily on either the experimental or quantitative side, enthusiasm to expand skills to include both experiments and quantitation is a must. The lab will offer a supportive atmosphere to enable this.

Applicants must have a PhD in Systems Biology, Biology, Physics, Biochemistry, or related field and expertise in experimental genetics and studying gene regulation. Relevant experience in Cyanobacteria is beneficial.

Successful candidates will have advanced knowledge of, and experience in, transcriptional regulation, standard genetics techniques, assays for gene expression and protein biochemistry, advanced microscopy techniques such as single cell time-lapse fluorescence based microscopy, and modelling of genetic networks using Ordinary Differential Equations. Experience in Matlab or equivalent software package is desirable. Publications in the field of gene expression regulation are required.
