Description

POSTDOCTORALS IN VERTEBRATE EMBRYOLOGY AND STEM CELL BIOLOGY

Funded postdoctoral appointments are available to study the functions ofcell signaling in embryonic development of Xenopus laevis and mammalianstem cell biology. The projects will investigate the biochemical andbiological functions of intercellular signals and novel signaltransduction components of the TGF-ß superfamily, with prime focus oncanonical (Smad) and non-canonical signaling by BMP and nodal/activinpathways. Complementary work using both embryonic and stem cell systemswill be encouraged. Potential projects include investigating thesignaling and biological functions of ubiquitin ligases (e.g. Smurfs andothers), new or understudied protein partners of Smads and Smurfs, BMPor nodal target genes, and crosstalk between TGF-ß pathways and othersignaling pathways. These topics are being approached at thebiochemical, cellular and embryonic levels, using a wide range of moderntechniques. These projects potentially can be meshed with relatedstudies on regeneration and the evolution of developmental mechanismsusing a cnidarian model, Nematostella vectensis, the Starlet Sea Anemone.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. and possess expertise in molecularbiology and/or cellular biology. Experience with embryos or stem cellsis preferred, but not required. Enthusiasm, motivation and an eagernessto learn new methods and systems are a must. Successful applicantsshould have excellent oral and written communication skills, and shouldhave published at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal (firstauthorship preferred).

The Thomsen laboratory is part of The Department of Biochemistry andCell Biology, and Center for Developmental Genetics, located in theCenter for Molecular Medicine at Stony Brook University. The campus issituated on the north shore of Long Island in very close proximity tobeaches, parks, wetlands and vineyards, and within easy strikingdistance of New York City and its myriad cultural assets.
