Applications and Development of Methodologies for Designing Hybrid Catalysts
Organometallic catalysts traditionally have a large reaction repertoireand substrate scope, however, they suffer from an ill-defined secondcoordination sphere. On the other hand, enzymes have extremely welldefined second coordination spheres and as such reactions catalysed byenzymes are generally stereo- and chemio-selective. The current projectaims to merge both of these classes through the design of hybridcatalysts, which will allow the larger substrate scope to beincorporated into the well-defined second coordination sphere of enzymes.
The project involves evaluating organometallic reactions in the gasphase and the continuum phase using QM methods. These methods are thenemployed to study naturally occurring metalloenzymes within a hybridQM/MM technique. Finally the methodology will be used in the design ofnew hybrid catalysts that employ the organometallic catalysts embeddedinto appropriate biomolecular systems.
In addition to the specific project advertised the PDRA would have theopportunity to work on collaborative projects in other areas such as thedetermination of organic reaction mechanisms. The PDRA position forms part of a larger EPSRC funded project and willinvolve working in collaboration with a PhD student.
The PDRA is within the graduate school of WestCHEM(http://www.westchem.ac.uk). WestCHEM has been formed as part of theScotCHEM initiative on pooling of Chemistry in Scotland. The Schoolbrings together the strengths of the two major chemistry researchschools in the West of Scotland, to offer an outstanding researchenvironment in a large, diverse and expanding chemistry research school.The student will be based at the University of Strathclyde. Thechemistry department at Strathclyde is one of the largest in the UK. In2007, the Guardian newspaper ranked us as best in Scotland, and in theU.K. Top Ten, in terms of our graduate employment prospects. Over thelast four years, over £10 million has been invested in bringing ourbuildings and laboratories up to 21st century standards. The departmentis located right at the heart of the City of Glasgow.
