Description
Applications are invited for the post of postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering and the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science at NUI. This research is funded by Science Foundation Ireland through the Research Frontiers Programme, and will be supervised by Dr. Nathan Quinlan.
Research project
Mechanical heart valves (MHVs) are highly successful in the treatment of heart valve disease, but can trigger thrombosis or hemolysis as a result of the flow-induced stress on blood cells. As a result, patients require lifelong medication. Very little is known about the stress on individual cells due to the transitional and turbulent flows in MHVs. We are conducting particle image velocimetry in large-scale working model heart valves to map the flow field at very high effective spatial and temporal resolution. The results will lead to new insight into the links between valve design and micro-scale flow structures which induce a biological response. The methodology and results of this research will be applicable to a range of cardiovascular devices and disease states.
