A postdoctoral research assistant is required to work on a project which aims to elucidate the role of the Ca2+ channels in epithelial cells from the airways in driving cellular responses and how this is altered in diseased states.

The post-holder will work under the supervision of Professor Anant Parekh and a member of his research team, and will be responsible for:
1. Isolating mast cells and epithelial cells from mouse and human material as well as cultured cell lines in preparation for genotyping, transfection, protein-protein interactions and fluorescence measurements.
2. Designing and implementing experimental protocols for delivering and manipulating ion channel activity and gene expression in living cells. Protocols will be discussed at regular group meetings.
3. Performing experiments to study Ca2+ handling in isolated cells under superfusion using an epifluorescence microscopy set-up and TiRF system. Analysing experimental data using in-house software.
4. Investigating signalling mechanisms using inhibitors, activators and altered gene expression and by performing studies of protein expression and cell proliferation.

You will have a DPhil/PhD or equivalent in a relevant area of research (cellular physiology, electrophysiology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry), the ability to pull down proteins (native and recombinant) using co-immunoprecipitation approaches, and to use fluorescent probes to measure cytoplasmic calcium concentration. You will have laboratory experience in cellular physiology and molecular biology and sufficient background knowledge in the field of ion channels and calcium regulation to work within the established research programmes.

The post is based in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Sherrington Building, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PT and funded by the American Asthma Foundation for 3 years.
