Description
Cancer Research UK funded positions working on new therapies for cancerat Birkbeck College and University College London.
Biophysical Screening/ crystallography
A postdoctoral position is available to work in the laboratory of DrTracey Barrett within the School of Crystallography at Birkbeck College.The applicant should have a strong background in the use of biophysicaltechniques and be expected to work closely with the medicinal chemists.Screening techniques (such as thermofluor and biacore) will be used toscreen for potential ligands of oncoproteins implicated in Karposi’sSarcoma and in the formation of drug resistant tumours in a medium tohigh throughput format. Knowledge of X-ray crystallography and/or NMR ishighly desirable along with protein purification and crystallisationskills. The School of Crystallography at Birkbeck College houses stateof the art facilities for biophysics (installed in a newly refurbished,purpose built laboratory), protein expression/purification and X-raydata collection that will include a CCD detector later on in the year.Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Tracey Barrett at t.barrett@mail.cryst.bbk.ac.uk.
Medicinal chemist/ molecular modeller
A medicinal chemist with an interest in molecular modelling is requiredto work in the laboratory of Dr David Selwood in The Wolfson Institutefor Biomedical Research. Applicants should have a PhD in organicchemistry, some knowledge of molecular modelling and expertise in drugdiscovery would be an advantage. The project involves the design andsynthesis of novel drug candidates for Kaposi’s sarcoma and other commoncancers involves and close collaboration with thecrystallography/screening team. This research will be done in closecollaboration with the group of Prof Chris Boshoff at UCL.
Applicants should be able to work as part of a team and contribute tothe design of drug molecules. The Selwood group undertakes research atthe interface of biology and chemistry.
