POST-DOCTORAL POSITIONS: SYNAPTIC FUNCTION
We are investigating the molecular events involved in exocytosis andendocytosis at the synapse using electrophysiology and imagingtechniques (especially total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy).
Two positions are available. The first uses neurons isolated fromtransgenic zebrafish expressing fluorescent fusion proteins regulatingvesicle behaviour at or near the active zone. The aim is to betterunderstand the processes that control the translocation and docking ofvesicles before fusion, as well as the retrieval of vesicles after fusion.
The second position utilizes cultured neurons expressing fluorescentreporters of vesicle fusion and the presynaptic calcium signal thatregulates fusion. The aim is to understand the processes controlling thepresynaptic calcium signal and synaptic strength.
Both positions are in the laboratory of Leon Lagnado in the NeurobiologyDivision at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge. Theprojects use a combination of molecular biology and advanced imagingmethods and may also involve electrophysiology. Experience in at leasttwo of these techniques would be required. A strong background incellular neuroscience is essential, and more specific interests insynaptic function would be an advantage.
